If you haven’t noticed the massive boom in co-working spaces in recent years, where have you been? Co-working spaces are everywhere. They’re popping up in towns and cities throughout the UK. Co-working space is big business. These businesses are serving the needs of start-ups the world over offering a range of benefits uniquely aligned to ambitious entrepreneurs looking for world domination.

I hope this newsletter finds you in the finest of form.

It’s February 2025, and the festive season is a distant memory. The new year is in full swing, and what a year it’s already been.

“May you live in interesting times” is an English idiom often said to be a translation of an old Chinese curse. The irony lies in the notion of “interesting,” as it usually alludes to times typically marked by difficulty and turmoil.

And ‘interesting times’ is possibly an understatement regarding the new incumbent of the White House. Whatever your thoughts on the greatness of this development or otherwise, let’s agree that the ‘interesting times’ arrived very quickly and will continue for quite some time. Well, at least four years, but the repercussions could be around for much longer.

It’s early days, but we must consider what some of DT’s directives might mean for investors and UK SMEs. The US may be far from us, but its reach and, by extension, DT’s influence is practically unlimited. So, having a working knowledge of the issues is better than being blown around haplessly by the winds of fate.

So, baton down the hatches, everyone; we’re in for a wild ride.

That’s Tariffic!

Last week, Trump slapped hefty tariffs (taxes on imports) on Canada, Mexico, and China, claiming they’ll fix trade issues, reduce illegal immigration and protect American jobs. But this move could cause more harm than good. Here’s why:

Price Hikes

Companies usually pass the extra costs onto domestic and commercial consumers when the US imposes import tariffs. That means higher prices for stuff people buy every day. You can expect to pay more if your supply chain has US goods or you source from the States (whether you know it or not).

Economies Go Into Reverse

Experts believe tariffs hurt economic growth. Businesses rely on buying and selling goods across borders, and when trade gets disrupted, jobs and those who depend on these countries for trade can be affected.

The Fight Back Begins

DT’s move effectively pulls the trigger on a trade war. China is challenging the US move and implementing retaliatory measures. The risk is that these moves are a mere amuse-bouche to what could balloon into a full-blown trade war, making life difficult for businesses and consumers worldwide.

Wall Street’s Spooked

The stock market doesn’t like uncertainty, and these tariffs make investors nervous. Economic disruptions tend to be contagious, so when businesses get hit with extra costs, supply chains creak, and trade slows down. Inevitably, global stocks dropped in response to DT’s announcement, which directly affects (your) retirement savings and investments.

All Bets Are Off

Americans are divided on the tariffs; MAGA Republicans support them, while Democrats argue that they will hurt the economy. But here’s the rub: DT has the EU in his beady sights for his tariff mania. If Europe is next on the list, expect the chaos to escalate. Will plucky Blighty escape? Will the ‘special relationship’, our post-Brexit status or the fact we host Trump golf courses save us? Don’t count on it. Trump has already said import taxes will “definitely happen” with the EU . He also said the UK “is out of line” on trade with the US and“we’ll see what happens”.

Buckle Up!

Trump still thinks tariffs will help America despite delaying those planned for Mexico and Canada for what he perceived as concessions from Trudeau and Sheinbaum.

Was this a climbdown or pain delayed? We’ll soon see. He campaigned that tariffs were“not going to be a cost to you; it’s a cost to another country”, so voters’ expectations will be high.

This strategy has economists worldwide scratching their heads, as tariffs are typically reflexive on the country imposing them. Indeed, DT admitted that they could inflict ‘some pain’ on US consumers. If he presses on with the EU, everyone can expect higher prices, job losses, and topsy-turvy stock markets. As the Bank Of England MPC committee commented: “Tariffs and other trade barriers would likely have adverse effects on UK activity.”

I’ve extensively discussed crypto markets and documented these ephemeral assets’ exhilarating highs and harrowing lows. But despite past negative comments about Crypto, DT seems to be on board now, and the associated markets had a field day. Flanked by a phalanx of tech bros , the potential for unrestrained Crypto markets has excited everyone (me included).

Maybe fans can look into their Crypto wallets with glee instead of choking back their tears.

Trump’s recent directives have reversed Biden’s strict stance on Crypto, embracing the industry. His administration now has crypto-friendly regulators, including an executive order promoting digital assets.

Crypto leaders now directly influence Washington, with key figures like David Sacks appointed to senior roles. Crypto legislation is becoming a government priority, with discussions on regulations, banking access, and a potential US federal Crypto stockpile.

But don’t get too excited; this is Crypto, after all, and even the honeyed words of the Trump administration can only go so far. Indeed, the tariff debacle shaved off billions from Crypto markets, telegraphing their ongoing fragility..

Risk Remains

Financial experts at Elliott Management remind us that Cryptocurrency is currently in a speculative bubble that will inevitably collapse. Investors are still effectively gamblers, with AI and stock speculation fuelling the frenzy. That all sounds depressingly familiar.

Bitcoin’s Price Surge & Market Impact

For now, the Crypto market is buoyant. Since Trump’s election, Bitcoin has surged by nearly 50%, briefly exceeding $100,000 before falling slightly back. It’s still at a high, though. Investors expect more favourable policies that could further boost digital assets. If you bought early, you might be opening the Champers!

Warm Words

It’s thought that Trump’s enormous 18-year-old son, Barron, influenced his father’s views on Crypto, helping him connect with younger voters. Add in cultural influencers like Snoop Dogg and warm words about Crypto from the financial mandarins who recently gathered in Davos, and the stage could be set for a new age of mainstream Crypto acceptance.

Crypto-Cashing In

No, not you; I mean the Trump dynasty. Donald’s embrace of Cryptocurrency extended to his launch of Trump and Melania Meme coins a few days before the inauguration.

For those who don’t know, these coins usually gain value through hype, social media trends, celebrity (like the dubious ‘Huc Tuah girl‘), or simply becoming the POTUS and FLOTUS of the US. Alas, for investors, Meme coins have no particular utility or value.

Still, it didn’t stop the US First family from making billions of dollars by fleecing those deluded enough to ignore that meme coins aren’t worth the paper they aren’t printed on.

The Jury’s Out

Maybe Crypto is ready to hit the mainstream? Perhaps it will become a credible financial product we can reliably invest in like any other stock. It may even herald the death of fiat currencies by the middle of the century as we pay for goods and services from our Crypto stash. Only time will tell. It could equally be driven back into the shadows with just a few off-the-cuff remarks from the current POTUS. And as for NFTs , well, let’s not go there.

Another Overused Adage

‘Keep calm and carry on.’ That’s all we can do. We should run our businesses as best we can while learning as much as possible about emerging risks.

While I don’t want to dedicate too many words to Mr Trump, it seems inevitable he’ll be living rent-free in the heads of business people for quite some time.

You might feel a little sad. It’s all over, you sigh. Don’t worry; that’s normal, but it’s time to trim our sails for the coming year and dive headlong into the promise of what’s to come.

Many will commit to positively changing their lives at the start of the year. These so-called resolutions often founder within a few days. But don’t worry, that’s normal, too. You’re not alone in seeing these aspirations turn to dust as they rub against ‘real life’. But for those who follow through and keep to your commitments, I salute you.

But maybe you could do the same exercise for your business. Every new year is brimming with opportunities for business growth, refreshed strategies, and new ideas, and always looking for opportunities to have a laugh along the way. As we know, the Trump administration is taking the reins in the US, which means the stage is set for an exciting ride for all of us.

It’s All Hot Air (Or Is It?)

Is it me, or was it Christmas 2024 when everyone embraced the Air Fryer? These were suddenly the must-have items of the year, and they are household appliances, not new games platforms or high-tech gadgets. What’s going on?

According to market research firm Statista, “the revenue in the UK air fryers market amounts to €142.9 million in 2024, with an expected annual growth rate of 10.62% from 2024 to 2029”.

That explains the number of people I’ve heard eulogising about their “new Ninja” and the marvellous culinary outputs it’s producing. Plus, the wealth of accessories, recipe books, and online content driving this phenomenon.

When you see that everyday foodstuffs like burgers, fish fingers, and chips have Air Fryer cooking instructions as standard, we know this contraption is a permanent feature of how we cook in the modern age. There is no need to clear cupboard space next to the dusty bread maker for this glorified hair dryer.

Naturally, if you’re in the food industry, you’ll need to account for this new tech in your processes. But it’s also a salutary lesson regarding a product that has ‘come of age’.

These are not new items, far from it; they’ve been around for ages. However, marketing, energy costs, health concerns, reliable functionality, and product development have created a consumer item that rivals the microwave in terms of utility and appeal.

If you could find the ‘next Air Fryer’ and produce or invest in it, you’ll ‘be made’. That could be something to search for in your 2025 plans.

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to my final newsletter of 2024—and what a year it’s been! Reflecting on the past 12 months, it’s clear that 2024 has been a highly consequential year, even in an age when we’ve had quite a few once-in-a-generation events.

It’s been a whirlwind for me, from attending thrilling sporting events like the Olympics to commenting on major financial shakeups and adding new services to the Enso brand . We saw the internet go down and an unexpected Oasis reunion (not to mention their remarkable ability to part me from my money). On the same note, we’ve had a change of government with all the financial ramifications of that democratic choice already playing out.

On the business front, my predictions about AI transforming every aspect of our lives were spot on. This technology now influences how we engage with commerce, government, and entertainment. However, I see this technology making the management of your business finances increasingly insightful and responsive, which is precisely why I started Enso in 2018.

Of course, we have the upcoming inauguration of an orange-tinged POTUS on January 20, 2025, which promises to bring even more twists to an already unpredictable landscape.

Manchester's Feelin' Supersonic

Hi Everyone

So, it's finally happened. After years of acrimony, barbed insults, and sniping on X

(Twitter), some infamous brothers have finally reconciled. No, I'm not referencing Harry

and Wills. I'm talking about those warring Mancunian siblings, Liam and Noel

Gallagher. Hatchets have been buried. Truces drawn, and bygones have become

bygones. Assuming this ceasefire holds, Oasis are officially back and playing a series of

mega-gigs in 2025.

They plan to do four gigs in North Manchester's Heaton Park, and the frenzy for tickets

will be epic. Diehard fans from the 90s and those who never saw these renowned sons

of a Burnage council estate will congregate in their thousands to celebrate this seismic

event. Naturally, the economic impact will be huge for the band, but there are also

immense benefits to the local economy. We'll also see a vast swell of interest in

Manchester as our most notorious musical icons take the stage.

I CAN'T WAIT!!

Let's Look Forward With Optimism

About 18 months ago, I wrote about Manchester as a great city for business. Now, the

spotlight is on us again; I thought it was time to revisit this theme, as things have

gotten a hell of a lot better.

Since devolution a decade ago, Manchester has been experiencing an almost

continuous growth phase. It is now in pole position to be Britain's "second city" and is

pushing forward as a beacon of political, cultural, and commercial innovation.

From plate glass office blocks to flexible working, Manchester is an unbeatable place

for businesses of all sizes to establish themselves. In 2020, Tech Nation hailed

Manchester as Europe's fastest-growing tech hub, acknowledging the city's expanding

digital infrastructure.

International companies like Amazon and PWC have a significant presence in

Manchester, driving output and employment forecasts and, in the process, growing

faster than London. GM benefits from the largest student population in Europe, who,

after graduation, provide local employers with a well-educated and creative workforce

to drive Manchester's continued success.

To Be Where There's Life

Culturally, Manchester remains at the cutting edge, but this reaches far beyond the

cliches about world-class football teams and the "Madchester" music scene.

With new art installations like Factory International, a new level of sophistication,

depth, and breadth infuses the scene. This is neatly illustrated by the eclectic content

of the respected Manchester International Festival. Indeed, the city now celebrates its

cultural catalysts in the annual Manchester Culture Awards. These artistic landmarks are

now part of Manchester's identity and go to enhance its global reputation. And if the

benefits of devolution and local decision-making can be fully unleashed, the sky's the

limit.

It's Gettin' Better (Man!!)

With the return of a Labour government, the city's influence will surely grow. Greater

Manchester has 27 MPs, most of whom are Labour and include some Cabinet-heavy

hitters. Most formidable, we have 'Ange' - Angela Rayner - the Stockport-born deputy

prime minister who will fly the flag for Greater Manchester as a critical player in the

UK's future prosperity.

The impressive Manchester skyline is the biggest clue to the city's rapid development.

Manchester looks increasingly like a US metropolis than a post-industrial northern town.

The construction boom is reshaping the urban landscape dramatically. I hope that it

doesn't overshadow the historic artefacts that remain from being the world's first

industrial city, as they are equally crucial to the Mancunian story.

I'm told that the city centre was once deserted in the evening, save for small bands of

revellers going to the pubs and clubs. On some mid-week nights, the city was strangely

quiet. Not anymore. People now have homes in the city centre and live and socialise

near the workplace. Since 2014, 20,000 residences have been created, 2,000 new hotel

rooms added, and many more are planned.

Manchester is well on its way to becoming a "15-minute city," which sounds pretty

good to me despite what conspiracy-minded types would have you believe.

All Around The World

Manchester is the only UK city outside London to be featured in JLL's "Innovation

Geographies" list, which ranks cities that are trendsetters in the knowledge economy.

Manchester sits alongside luminaries like Taipei and Milan, underlining its growing

importance as a centre of innovation and a new mindset about how we work.

That's why Manchester offers the perfect blend of opportunity and quality of life. With

access to Manchester International Airport and regular fast train connections to

London, the city is no longer an isolated northern outpost but a surefire place for

businesses to invest confidently.

And let's remember some of the other towns in Greater Manchester. Trafford, for

example, is one of the most desirable places to live in the UK (it's home to Manchester

United, so there is no surprise there). DJ Unabomber described Stockport as 'das neue

Berlin' for its burgeoning, lively nightlife. The town recently opened 'The Occulus,' its

acclaimed transport Interchange. It was one of the most significant civil engineering

projects in the UK.

The benefits of central Manchester's revival are now spreading to the whole city region,

meaning more jobs, a broader cultural palette, and exciting opportunities. This can

only mean a better existence for those who live and work throughout the region.

(Greenhouse) Gas Panic!

Or not as it happens. A focus on sustainability contributes to Manchester's success.

Without a ULEZ in sight (yet), the Eden building, with its lush living wall and emphasis

on eco-friendly design, shows Manchester cares about the planet. Plus, stated political

goals include decarbonising buildings and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by

2038. The city's focus on sustainability is essential to young workers, who prefer

employers who share their environmental values.

Be Here Now

As Manchester continues to climb the international ranks, the future looks bright for a

city carving out its unique vision of the future. Informed by its rich history as a

pioneering place for business, Manchester deservedly is making its mark on the global

stage.

Does an Oasis homecoming gig enhance this? Well, it can't do any harm, and the

money and recognition the gigs will attract to the city's businesses should not be

sniffed at.

Still, even without this unexpected return of one of the greatest bands the region has

produced, the energy and optimism in the city are palpable, and as the song goes:

'things can only get better'. That's why I'm super-proud to be a Manc, to base my

business here and to support my many local clients, who contribute to the city's

ongoing success.

Part Of The Queue

OK, so now our only problem is getting tickets. When they go on sale, the phone lines

and websites of the leading agencies will be red hot, and quite a few redial and refresh

buttons will wear out before they're declared sold out. That won't take long, I expect.

Cybersecurity Tips For SMEs: Protecting Your Business In The Digital Age

Hello again, one and all; how are you doing?

Well, it's been an eventful few weeks since the last newsletter. We've had to put the

disappointment of the Euros final behind us, and we've now said goodbye to Gareth

Southgate, who, for my money, did a sterling job despite the lack of silverware.

As I write, we are in the throes of the Paris Olympics, which are going to plan as far as I

can tell. What did you think of the rain-sodden and frankly bizarre opening ceremony,

by the way?

But I want to talk about the Crowdstrike cyber meltdown, which caused chaos for

millions of Microsoft users in mid-July. This incident is a stark reminder of the potential

risks in the digital age. It's a wake-up call for all businesses, large or small, to prioritise

cybersecurity. If any Enso clients were affected and need to understand the financial

impacts, get in touch.

Worse, though, this event gave Mac users like me even more reason to feel smug

about our choice of IT kit! No doubt this vanity will end in humiliating hubris. It's only a

matter of time before some AI-enabled bad actor discovers how to penetrate our shiny,

overpriced laptops and wipe the self-satisfied smile from our entitled faces.

While there was little MS users could have done to avoid the Crowdstrike mega-glitch,

SMEs are being targeted by cybercriminals every day. That's why savvy business

owners will implement robust security measures to protect their firms and clients. So

here are some simple but practical cybersecurity tips to do just that.

It's Everyone's Job

Every member of your team should be cyber-savvy. This means Regular training

sessions to help your employees understand cyber threats and how to counter them.

Teach them to recognise phishing emails, avoid suspicious links, and practice safe

online behaviour. A culture of cybersecurity awareness ensures everyone understands

their role in protecting company data.

If you're still using "password123," go and stand in the corner. Implementing strong

password policies is a classic 'no-brainer'. Everyone must use complex passwords and

update them regularly. If you can incorporate multi-factor authentication (MFA) for an

added layer of security, then go ahead. Of course, password sharing is a no-no, and

no-blame reporting of compromised passwords should be encouraged. Check here for

tips on creating a strong password.

Update & Stay Ahead of the Curve

Cyber threats evolve rapidly. Bad Actors constantly find new ways to breach defences.

It's a pity they don't use these skills to do nice things, isn't it? Stay ahead by keeping

your software up to date. Ensure that all operating systems, applications, and antivirus

programs are regularly updated with the latest security patches. Enable automatic

updates where possible so you never miss a critical patch. Of course, this won't have

prevented the Crowdstrike incident, but this tip remains sound advice overall.

Backup Data Regularly

Data loss can be catastrophic, but regular backups can save the day, especially against

ransomware attacks. Back up your critical business data frequently and store it securely,

whether offsite or in the cloud. And remember to test your backup plan to ensure your

network can be restored without a hitch should the worst happen.

Secure Networks

There are a few businesses where IT isn't the backbone of their operations, so

protecting your network is paramount. As you'll know, all my clients rely on tech to run

their firm's finances efficiently. Install firewalls to prevent unauthorised access and

implement intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS) to monitor for suspicious

activity. This is your first line of defence against cyber threats, so make sure it's tip-top.

Lock Down Wi-Fi Access

If not appropriately secured, Wi-Fi networks can be an open door for cybercriminals.

Use strong encryption (like WPA3) and hide your network SSID to make it less visible to

outsiders. Ensure only authorised devices can connect using strong passwords and

well-conceived access controls.

Access Privileges & Control

Only some people in your organisation need access to all data. Restricting data access

on a need-to-know basis helps plug potential problems. This is known as the principle

of least privilege (PoLP). Implementing role-based access control (RBAC) in your tech

can help manage permissions effectively and reduce the risk of insider threats.

Keep Malware Out

Malware can wreak havoc on your systems, so robust antivirus and anti-malware

software can keep threats at bay. Ensure your team understand the dangers of

downloading software from untrusted sources and run regular scans on your network

for these unpleasant gremlins.

Protect Data On The Go

Mobile devices are everywhere, and no more so than in the workplace. Mobile tech

that accesses your network must be protected using strong passwords or biometric

authentication. Do you know how to remotely wipe mobile capabilities to erase data if

a device is lost or stolen? Accidents happen, so know how to prevent your valuable

data from falling into the wrong hands.

Best Laid Recovery Plans

Even if you're conscientious about data management, breaches can still happen. An

incident response plan ensures you can act swiftly and effectively. Document clear

steps to take in the event of a security incident and include contact information for key

personnel and external partners, such as network providers, your legal team, and cyber

support contracts.

Continuous Improvement

Tech is constantly changing, and cyber-baddies are continually devising new and

nefarious ways to ruin your day. That's why Regular security audits can identify new

vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with security policies (and the law). Inviting

external cybersecurity experts to perform an objective review will provide valuable

insights on improving cyber defences. That's money well spent, in my view.

Encrypt Your Information Today!

Encryption is a powerful tool for protecting sensitive data in transit and at rest. Ensure

that encryption keys are managed securely and that your licences are always current.

Again, a bit of training will ensure that your team understands the importance of

ALWAYS using encryption to safeguard information.

Trust Cloud Services (But Verify)

At Enso, we rely on cloud services to offer our clients convenience and scalability, but

we only use selected suppliers. Why? Because security varies by provider. I only

recommend cloud services with iron-clad security practices and verifiable compliance

certifications. In the same spirit, you should familiarise yourself with the security

settings of the cloud platforms you rely on and configure them to protect your data.

Check, Little & Often

Implementing logging and monitoring allows you to monitor user activities and detect

unusual behaviour. Review your logs regularly to spot potential security incidents early

and take prompt action. Do some research in your crucial systems to find out where

this useful BI can be accessed and used.

Best Efforts Will Make A Difference

All the above are just the tip of the iceberg for protecting your firm. Some of these

simple steps may take more work for micro businesses. However, awareness is a good

starting point, reviewing where you stand today and doing all you can to keep yourself

and your clients safe. Remember, it can be expensive to fail in these areas, as keeping

customer data secure is legally required.

Use quieter summer months (if such a thing exists!) to look at your tech set-up and

policies. You'll sleep better knowing you're in good cyber shape (or will be).

Ten Seconds To Glory

Your Cyber audit might take you a few hours, which is considerably longer than it’ll take

the Men’s sprint finalists to cover 100m on Sunday. And I’m happy to report I’ll be

there to see it!

I’ll spend the weekend in Paris soaking up the atmosphere and looking to see as many

events as possible in and around the city, especially the packed athletics schedule in

the State De France.

I’m hoping to see the remarkable balloon Olympic Flame in the Tuileries Garden plus

as many of the sights and sounds of Paris. It’ll be a fast and furious visit to the cité

d'amour but with more unforgettable sporting memories to look back on.

Change Is Coming Now Labour's At The Helm: What Small Businesses Need To Know

Hi, everyone. My apologies for the late arrival of this newsletter.

There's been a lot going on, and I decided to wait until the gennylec was over and see

where we stand as the new government gets going.

It's early days, but we're getting some indications of what's in the pipeline. There's

plenty of commentary about expected moves from the new Cabinet for me to make

some of my landmark predictions and comments about what the future holds for UK

businesses.

Of course, the result didn't surprise anyone, including the beleaguered Rishi Sunak or

most of the Tory party. The only outstanding questions were about scale and impact.

So now we know: It was a historic result for Labour. The Liberal Democrats, after Ed

Davey's action-packed campaign, are relevant again. Finally, Reform has a few seats in

The Commons, with Nigel Farage set to make his vociferous mark on the lower

chamber for good or ill.

We know there will be changes to the UK's financial landscape, and small business

owners must pay close attention to what this means for them.

Let's break down the key points and how they might impact your business.

Relaxed Markets

Unsurprisingly, the UK's stock markets reacted little to Labour's win. The FTSE 100 and

FTSE 250 indices even went up slightly. This calm reaction suggests that the markets

priced in a Labour win some time ago, so it's all nice and relaxed with no panic. I bet

ex-MPs Truss and Kwarteng are looking on enviously.

It'll be worth monitoring areas such as Infrastructure and Defence in the future.

Labour's plans to invest in green projects and increase defence spending should

benefit these sectors. The energy sector may be subject to turbulence as Labour's

policies on taxes for energy companies and the rollout of GB Energy takes shape. It'll

be worth monitoring the nationalised water and transport industries, too.

Overall, though, the commentariat thinks the UK market is undervalued, meaning there

might be good opportunities for long-term investments. If the new government can

boost confidence, this will enable growth for businesses of all sizes.

Property & Housing

If Labour's plans work, we'll have 1.5 million new homes built in this parliament at a

rate of 300,000 new homes per year. The NIMBY lobby's voice will be loud but

disregarded. This policy will see significant changes to the planning system and

strategies to manage skills shortages in construction.

Even now, the housing market shows increased activity and rising prices. Despite

expected interest rate hikes, mortgage rates are slightly below recent peaks, and

mortgage approvals are up. This suggests the housing market might stay strong, but

affordability remains a concern for many homebuyers, especially first-timers.

Sterling & The Foreign Exchange Market

Sterling has remained stable in the face of Labour's win. Analysts say this is because

the markets expected the outcome. However, experts predict the pound might weaken

against the Euro over the next two years if interest rates tick down as the Bank of

England declares victory in its struggle with inflation.

Bond Markets & Gilts

Few expect Labour's win to impact the UK's bond markets significantly. Historically,

government bond yields (interest rates) don't change much when a new government

comes in. However, businesses are looking to the government for direction, particularly

regarding the impact of technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Investing In AI

Tony Blair has chipped in on the need for tech investment, particularly AI, to enhance

public services and improve citizens' lives. He thinks AI can create £12 billion of annual

fiscal space by the end of the first Labour term and £40 billion by (an assumed) second.

That's a valuable chunk of public service-friendly pocket change. And streamlining

services in healthcare, education, and government infrastructure efficiencies will hugely

benefit businesses.

Of course, there will be downsides, as jobs are lost to technology and data

management and privacy risks increase. As we know, public bodies need a better

record in this area. The government will need strong regulation and mitigation

strategies to manage these futuristic changes.

Stability & Investor Confidence

Labour's win has brought a sense of stability to the markets (so far). The FTSE 100

index went up, and the pound has strengthened. Keir Starmer's leadership will bring a

calmer and more moderate political climate, avoiding the fiscal turmoil that affected

bond markets in 2022.

With Labour’s securing a decisive majority, investors can feel more confident about the

future. This stability is desirable, particularly when other countries are experiencing

political upheaval, so enhanced inward investment could come soon. That is an

excellent prospect, so thanks, France!

What This Means For Small Businesses

Labour's victory heralds a more predictable political environment, a welcome change

for small businesses. After years of political uncertainty, this result should provide the

stability businesses need to plan and grow. With an emphasis on smoothing

relationships across the board and, crucially, with the EU, there's a good chance doing

business, especially in exports, will get easier. This optimistic outlook is a much-needed

ray of hope, but expect Brexit purists to scream the house down over even small EU

concessions.

Labour has promised not to raise taxes on 'working people'; while this should help

maintain and promote economic stability, it's a promise that leaves many doors open.

Are businesses and business owners included? What about those who live on interest

or dividends? Pensioners? Inheritors? The uber-rich?

Many of these people will be sceptical that their taxes will remain stable. Time will tell.

The new government's focus on infrastructure, international markets, housing, and tech

investments could create abundant new opportunities for small businesses. By

improving efficiency through process improvement and investing in AI, companies can

become more competitive and innovative. This potential for growth and commercial

progress is inspiring, and if things go well, the future could indeed look a whole lot

brighter.

Despite these positive signs, the new government faces challenges. The international

scene remains febrile. There is the prospect of the US elections in November and the

orange-tinged implications the result could bring to our shores.

The UK economy is still fragile. Debt is eye-wateringly high, and while inflation has

fallen, service prices remain high. Growth is sluggish, but interest rate cuts by the Bank

of England and cheaper borrowing will help businesses make confident investment

decisions that will promote growth for UK plc.

So, What Are My Conclusions?

There is nothing concrete as yet, but Labour's victory at this very early stage brings a

new era of political stability and pragmatic, less ideological decision-making. Business

owners should thrive in this new environment by focusing on growth, leveraging

technology, and navigating the economic landscape wisely.

So, let’s see, shall we?

Bring It Home, Boys!

I'll no doubt return to politics as things pan out but let's turn to some results that have

been less predictable.

I'm talking about the England team's lumpy progress to the Euro finals in Germany. You

know I adore my football and would have loved to have been there to cheer on

England.

But has there been enough to cheer about? It didn’t seem like it. When we watched

their journey to yet another final in a major tournament, it was as smooth as riding

every roller coaster at Chessington World of Adventure.

Each game has been a mixture of stomach-churning lows with barren patches of

lacklustre goal-less action punctuated by dodgy, puzzling substitutions. When all

seemed lost, we got exhilarating highs and unlikely wins from last-minute goals and

buttock-clenching penalty shootouts.

And then, in the semis, we saw off the Netherlands to get into the finals, bish, bash,

bosh. It was like a different team had been shipped in. While they weren’t totally

dominant, a superb 90-minute goal from Ollie Watkins means England will face Spain

in the Berlin final on 14 July.

Just as Keir Starmer has been described as a lucky general in UK politics, Gareth

Southgate might be the same for international footie. Both will say that a win's a win,

Effective Strategies To Outshine Your Business Competitors

To say you find me in good spirits as I open this newsletter would be a massive understatement!

As a lifelong Manchester United fan, I couldn't help but draw a parallel between their recent

victory and the world of business competition. Just as the boys brought home the FA Cup after a

lacklustre season, your business can triumph over tough competitors with the right strategy. And

to take this silverware from under the nose of our old enemies, the 'noisy neighbours', is akin to

outperforming your closest business rivals!

Will this final flourish save Erik Ten Hag's job? Who knows? But, whatever happens, he finished

the 2024 season strongly with what I believe was a perfect strategy designed to beat tough

competitors.

Tackling Your Competition

This excellent result got me thinking. What magic will help you outperform your competitors?

It's pretty simple, really; it's ensuring your strategy covers all the bases consistently and with

quality at its core. So here's my take on some areas to look at if you want your business to be as

victorious as my Old Trafford heroes!

Know Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

You wouldn't believe how many potential clients I ask who can't tell me their USP. However,

understanding and clearly defining your USP is crucial. In short, it's what sets your business

apart from your competitors. It could be exceptional customer service, innovative products, or

competitive pricing. For example, in ENSO, I emphasise using tech to do the day-to-day finance

testament to your business's unique strengths and capabilities, something to be confident and

Once you've nailed down your offer, make it a central part of your marketing plans. Use the

alchemy of online and offline marketing channels to reach your ideal clients, including social

media, email marketing, content marketing, and local advertising. And if, after all that hard work,

your marketing messages fail to highlight your USP, we need to have a 'little chat.'

Monitor Market Changes

The business environment is constantly evolving, and adapting is crucial. What are the industry

trends, customer preferences, and technological advancements coming down the pipeline? For

example, generative AI's impact on all aspects of the business world is only just beginning. This

What Do Your Clients Think?

Customer feedback is not just a form of market research, it's a goldmine of insights. What are

towards building loyalty and satisfaction.

The Price Is Right

Benchmarking your pricing is a valuable exercise. While competitive pricing is never the lowest

and market positioning helps you set attractive, profitable prices as part of your marketing mix.

That said, offering occasional discounts or loyalty rewards can also entice customers as part of a

recruitment drive.

Are there any businesses that are not online in today's digital age? Probably not. Your website

The 'Gennylec' Is Finally Here

After months of speculation, years of wrangling, and ongoing controversy that's heralded a

rancorous societal change in the UK, another form of competition is underway in our country.

I am talking about the General Election—the #gennylec, as Gen Z has dubbed it.

Now, I'm not here to tell you what to think or how to vote. However, I encourage you to engage

with the process and ensure your voice is heard. This is one of the few times when we get our say

on the direction of our society, the economy, education, health, international relations, and how

our businesses will fare going forward. So, here are a few things to consider as the #gennylec

juggernaut gets up to speed.

Are you registered to vote? If not, it's not too late. Contact your Local Authority and get on the

media to understand what the various parties offer. There'll be a lot of misinformation around, so

be discerning. Ask yourself who will be best for me, my family, my community, and my

business. Whether you want to change or keep the status quo, make your decision based on well-

considered arguments and the best information.

Hello, hello. How are things with you guys?

Another month, another newsletter brimming with advice and tips to make your lives

easier.

Talking of helpful info, here's something I didn't know: Summertime in the UK starts on

a specific date. Who knew? It coincides with the Summer Solstice, which is Thursday,

June 20 this year. How specific is that? This is the longest day of the year. I think it's

good to know this, given the variable weather we have all year round in Blighty. We can

wake up on the 20th and say: 'Yay, it's Summer!' It is a valuable celebratory landmark,

especially when you draw back the blinds and survey the wet and windy conditions

outside.

As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, Summer 2024 is expected to be a busy period.

Therefore, engaging in early summer planning before the 20th can significantly

contribute to your sense of preparedness, control and ability to exploit the

opportunities ahead. To assist you in this process, I've prepared a comprehensive

checklist to guide you through the warmer(!?) months ahead.

Handle The Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, it's crucial to get a handle on your team's going

away plans sooner rather than later. Encourage your team to submit their holiday

requests as quickly as possible. For instance, you could set a deadline for holiday

requests to be submitted by the end of May. Doing so will give you valuable insight

maintain productivity while accommodating time off. Moreover, it gives your payroll

team's work-life balance is paramount to me in an environment of heightened

In addition to holiday requests, now is the ideal time to evaluate your staffing needs for

the upcoming summer season. Demand increases during the warmer months for firms

like home and garden stores, restaurants, and gardening services. If your business falls

into these categories, you may need to expand your workforce to meet seasonal

customer and workload demands.

Anticipating seasonal fluctuations in staffing requirements allows you to stay ahead of

the curve and ensure seamless operations during the busier summer. Now is the time

to address your staffing needs and organise recruitment processes. Planning for extra

staffing will help you enhance customer satisfaction and more easily meet increased

summer demand.

Maintaining healthy cash flow is paramount for any business, particularly when summer

is less busy. I've told you this many times! A comprehensive cash flow forecast provides

plan and allocate your resources.

vigilant and anticipate potential cash flow gaps. By identifying and addressing these

early on, you can implement contingency measures such as overdraft protection,

flow planning helps you avoid cash flow gaps and ensures that you have the necessary

funds to meet your business's needs during the summer season.

Shine Up Workspace & Processes

surprised when I say you could look for digital solutions, such as automating cash flow

May Is Actually Out Of This World

We enjoy two bank holidays in May, with the themes of the renewal of nature and

international labour rights. However, there are a couple of more esoteric days where

Luke, I am Your Annual Celebration

We kick off the month with Star Wars Day, a celebration that unites fans worldwide in

their love for George Lucas' iconic sci-fi universe. Every May 4, fans come together to

pay homage, sparked by a punny twist on 'May the Force be with you' - 'May the

fourth be with you'.

This grassroots celebration, not an official decree from the Jedi Council, has grown

faster than a Millennium Falcon doing the Kessel Run. It has captured the imagination

of fans with its vrooming light sabres and opportunities for abundant cosplay.

Lucasfilm and Disney eventually joined the party, recognising it as an annual fiesta of all

things Star Wars (let's not mention the associated merchandising, shall we?).

So, if this is your idea of fun, don your Jedi robes, grab your droid mates and party like

you're Darth Vader on an imminently exploding Death Star.

Don't Forget Your Towel

While many will be aware of Star Wars Day, Towel Day is a more low-key but equally

quirky sci-fi celebration that occurs annually on May 25 and commemorates the life of

writer Douglas Adams.

Why towels, you ask? According to Adam's beloved opus, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to

the Galaxy," they're the Swiss Army knife of interstellar travel, serving as everything

from a makeshift blanket on chilly moons to a cosy beach mat on exotic planets.

Adams' sage advice is always leave home with your trusty towel. For over twenty years,

sci-fi aficionados worldwide have embraced this day of towel-toting to honour Adams'

whimsical wisdom, all with a tongue-in-cheek air (do aliens have tongues?).

So, how can you join in on this remarkable event? It's simple. First, grab a towel and

proudly display it throughout the day. Share a photo on social media with #towelday,

and connect with fellow enthusiasts to share in the fun.

Don't forget to drop lines from Adams's books like “Would it save you a lot of time if I

just gave up and went mad now?” or "Time is an Illusion. Lunchtime doubly so" into

No doubt as you read this, you’re feeling worried. Chances are you’re socially distancing and doing your bit to help the UK counter the alarming effects of Covid-19. I share your concerns. I’m worried about my family, my colleagues and friends, and my clients.

It’s time for us all to step up, and all do what we need to combat the virus. And for concerned clients, you need help; trustworthy, professional and dedicated. Let me assure you that I’m committing my team to support your business to get through this crisis using as much of my time and knowledge as is required.

In the first instance, let's have a quick review of some of the critical legislative changes you may need to be aware of to help you protect your business and from which we can start our work.

Employee Retention Scheme

While all the current support on offer from the Exchequer is remarkable, this is the most extraordinary. Never has such a move been made in war or peacetime. In a landmark intervention to prevent mass job losses, the government has committed to pay 80% of the wages of employees at risk of redundancy or being laid off up to a maximum of £2500 pm. Any PAYE employee of a limited company can apply via HMRC.

While there are more details to come, a visit to the gov.uk online portal is where to start, support for the self-employed/sole traders and partners is less generous. Although unprecedented, these workers will only be eligible to claim universal credit at the same rate of SSP rated at £95.85 weekly from April 2020.

Apply for Universal Credit at www.universal-credit.service.uk . There may be more on this particular areas over the coming days.

The Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)

The government has committed to back bank loans to small businesses from the 40+ accredited lenders and partners of the British Business Bank. Many are high street banks and building societies.

The government will guarantee the first 80% of the loan. The liability for the remaining 20% will remain with the business. The maximum facility is £5m. The monies will be made available as quickly as possible with no need for security or personal guarantors for loans of up to £250K. The government will pay the first 12 months interest and fees.

The intention is to help businesses to bolster cash flows and bridge reductions in revenues. Obviously, this is still a loan that will need to be paid back over six years and remember they will bring an element of drag to future post-Covid-19 cash flows. Small Business Grants

In the March 20 budget, the initial Coronavirus support grant was set at £3k. This has now increased to £10k. It means any business operating from premises who qualified for 100% rates relief can apply for £10k grant to help with overhead costs.

Hospitality Business Grants Of £25,000

Small businesses in the hospitality, leisure and nursery industries will receive a 12-month business rates holiday. Additionally, those occupying properties with a rateable value between £15 - £51K are eligible for a grant of up to £25k.

For this and the Small Business Grant and how they work go to the website of your local authority to find out more about the arrangements in place.

HMRC - Time to Pay

HMRC is taking a supportive line on taxation delays and deferrals. Income tax due in July will is deferred until January 2021. VAT payments for March delayed until June 2020.

For further clarity, you may need to speak to HMRC but do note the lines will be understandably busy. It may be useful to cancel any automated payments such as direct debits or standing orders so you don’t ‘accidentally’ pay as you won’t get this back!

Other Support/Info

SSP Changes

Sick pay will now be payable from day one of a notified illness or related to the need to self-isolate. Alas, it’s hardly a trove of riches with statutory sick pay amounting to a mere £94.25 per week for a maximum of 28 weeks. Again, how this will be administered is expected soon but is likely to be via the PAYE system.

Mortgage Holidays

Homeowning clients can take a 3-month mortgage holiday. There is also provision currently for renters with legislation preventing landlords from evicting tenants due to rent arrears.

IR35 Delayed

The controversial and worrying amendments to IR35 will not now be implemented until April 2021 offering much-needed relief to contractors.

Interruption Insurance

One must-do check is to see if your business insurance has an interruption provision. If so, insurers have committed to paying without onerous procedures.

Interest Rates

The Bank of England has slashed interest rates to an historic low of 0.1%. As dramatic as that looks, it comes off the back of very low rates, so the impact may only be marginal. At the same time, The Bank has bought £200bn of government bonds as we see the return of Quantitative Easing.

The impact is hard to estimate given the fluid nature of the virus, but we can reasonably expect The Bank to make further moves as they see fit.

More often than not, when I start to work with a new client I’ll begin by doing a review of where they are with their business finances. You might think that’s the obvious place to start and you’re right. But at the same time I’m always a tad concerned at how little some business owners know about what’s going on in their accounts.

OK yes, they’ve finally made a great decision by in calling the Enso team, but I often wonder how some firms have progressed so far on such inadequate business information.

In the modern age with the world moving so quickly and with huge issues looming on the political horizon, it’s vital business owners have up to date information. Only by knowing how their company is performing at any given time does it allow them to make smart tactical decisions and head off issues at the pass.

One of the essential financial measures is cash flow or the ebbs and flows of cash in the business that affect its ongoing liquidity. In short, does the company have enough money to continue trading?

Failure to manage cash flows is always a recipe for disaster as many a failed entrepreneur will confirm.
